BIKING THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Beginning in fall 2001 and through summer 2007 I biked the Blue
Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia, USA.
Because campsites and shops near the Parkway are few and far between, the
logistics of
doing this are quite complicated.
What I did was to take the bike in my truck to a
campground
on the Parkway. I would then bike a day away from there to
the next camping area,
carrying overnight
gear plus food for two days. The following day I returned to the truck to rest and
restock the food supply. Alternatively, I would bike a half day away from the
truck and return the same day. Next day I would
head in the opposite direction for a day or half day, camping if needed, then pedal
back to the truck and civilization.
The blue dots show where I stayed at night. Note that dots may be more than one
day's ride apart.
I eventually biked the Blue Ridge Parkway both ways; totaling 940 miles (1500 km).
